Creative Black Country are looking for volunteers to be part of the Joke Exchange at Funny Things Festival by holding up placards that tell jokes that have been collected from the people of Wolverhampton. The Joke Exchange is a public art project by Redhawk Logistica, that has been commissioned by Creative Black Country as part of the Funny Things Festival, a new comedy festival for Wolverhampton and the Black Country that takes place 23rd October to 7th November in venues across Wolverhampton.

The Joke Exchange has been on the streets of Wolverhampton collecting jokes from passers-by, and has also called for jokes through social media and the Express and Star. The best jokes will be displayed on placards in the city centre, with one shown every day in September (except Sundays), and this is where you come in…
We need volunteer placard holders between 12pm and 6pm every day, except Sundays, between 1st and 30th September. We will have teams of two each day, so you won’t be required to stand still with the placard for the entire 6 hours, you can take it in turns. We also want everyone to be part of a massed stand with all of the placards on Saturday 28th October 11am – 1pm.

There are also loads of other opportunities to volunteer to be part of the Funny Things Festival, handing out flyers during the month before the festival, stewarding events and supporting participatory activities. All volunteers will get their travel expenses covered and get the opportunity to attend events for free or at special reduced ticket prices during the festival.

What being a Joke Exchange placard volunteer involves:
· You can sign up for as many days as you wish, either a regular day each week, or specific days and times that you are available;
· You will need to wear warm, waterproof, comfortable clothing and shoes, as you will be outside;
· We will try to make sure you are positioned somewhere that you will be able to sit down or lean, and you will get regular breaks as you will be working in teams of two, taking it in turns to hold the placard;
· When you’re not holding the placard you can take as much time for breaks as you wish, and if you’re happy to do so, it would be great if you would also hand out flyers about the festival to passers-by;
· We will provide you with lunch and cover your travel expenses;
· A photograph will be taken of you whilst you are holding the placard, and we will send you a digital copy of your photo;
· You will be supported by a member of the festival project team, whilst you are taking part as a placard holder;
· You will not be expected to perform or tell any jokes, you just need to hold your placard;
· We will provide you with flyers about the festival that you can give to anyone who asks what the placards are for;
· We request that you can be available for a briefing on the evening of Wednesday 30th August at The Light House, and for the massed stand of placards during the day on Saturday 28th October 11am – 1pm.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to be part of a public art project, and part of the first comedy festival in Wolverhampton. It’s a chance to make local people smile, and brighten up their day.
